Here’s an updated list of Animal Shelters and Rescues in Washington. I also included listings of shelters that work with offenders in Washington correctional facilities that train and adopt out dogs from area shelters.
Please remember that this is not a comprehensive list, so if you don’t see a rescue or shelter on the list email its information to me at info@seattledogspot.com. I’ll add them to the list in a couple of weeks.
You should also note that the list does not include what I believe are shady dog rescues in Washington. If a rescue is on the list that engages in questionable behavior, please send an email to let me know and I’ll look into it.
I put the list of rescues and shelters on Google Documents to make it more accessible and easier to download. Click here to access the list.
Thank you for getting the list out! Our email address is smidgetrescue@hotmail.com not .gmail Thanks!
Thanks! Will fix asap.
Sorry I will add it. I can send you a file if that would be better for you.
Could you add Jack Russell Rescue OWII (Oregon Washington Idaho Inc.) to the reputable list please.
ok thanks!
Hi, I’m following up here re: a couple of emails I sent this a.m. Wondering if you have this list in an excel file? I’m working on a comprehensive list as well and would be happy to share.
Thank you.
I’m trying to reconstruct the list so that will be possible. Check with me tomorrow – hopefully I’ll have it by then.
Out of curiosity what makes a rescue “shady?” I happened to be browsing Petfinder recently and was surprised at how many shelters seemed to be getting dogs from out of state shelters or some undisclosed location. Some of them had some pretty impressive adoption fees. I am not sure what I think about bringing in dogs from other areas. I do think that rescues should do what they can to recoup their costs, but I admit that I almost wondered if some of the rescues were actually some kind of money making scheme.
You’re absolutely correct – some rescues are just money making schemes. Furever Homes has illegally brought puppies into the US from Mexico and sold them for hundreds of dollars. Many of them have gotten sick and died. I consider that shady. So are “rescue” groups that get dogs off craigslist and then sell them for lots of money while claiming these dogs were saved from euthanization at a shelter. Other rescue groups like P.U.R.R.R. have brought in dogs with behavior problems from CA to WA and adopted them out without giving them any sort of behavior training. A few of their dogs ended up attacking killing other pets and, they eventually had to be put down. “Saving” a dog from euthanization in CA only to be euthanized in WA is NOT rescue. Oh, and even if the dog is put down P.U.R.R.R. still keeps the hundreds of dollars in adopting fees. People need to carefully research rescues before adopting from them. Even a simple google search can uncover complaints about a particular rescue.
Hi I have ran into the EXACT same problem. They are coming from Texas primarly, then CA and some from NY? Apparently according the USDA who sent me o WA State USDA that WA has become the new dumping ground and there is nothing they can do as long as they are licensed correctly (as Furever dog found out).
When I told it felt like most of the shelters don’t even seem to have ANY dogs that are not part of this group she said that’s great. Meaning as long as they are not pulling resources from the state they don’t care. I myself am on SSI and have been trying to find a new dog companion for almost a year. The only thing I am find the most of are Bulldogs Pit bulls ad Rottweilers The price range I have seen is 300 to 900 dollars, which baffles me. Frustrating.
Thanks for the info. What did they mean by “licensed correctly.” And what kind of dog are you looking for? I might be able to help.
I wouldn’t adopt from any rescue that charges $400 or more for a dog. Even if it’s legitimate
(which I would doubt), there are tons of rescues that charge $200-$300.
How about Save-A-Mutt, did over 500 pulls and rescues last year alone. 🙂
Thanks! Can’t believe I left you guys off the list!
Thanks for always being ready to crosspost for us. This list is awesome!!
I am wondering if you have heard of Gingers pet rescue in lynnwood, Wa.?
Yes, I have.
Thank you for this list!
You’re welcome!
Please update the location for Northwest German Shepherd Rescue to Mill Creek, WA (our mailing address). We are entirely foster-based and located all across the Puget Sound region, so that’s close enough 🙂 Thank you for all you do!
Will do thank you!
Hi, looking forward to a downloadable version of this list. We are looking for a nice, cat compatible dog.. so keeping an eye out for contact info. Thanks!
Should have it done today or tomorrow.
Hi, thank you for listing HAVA. We are a no-kill shelter operating with only volunteers. Everything we make, goes back into the animals at Harry’s House, our shelter
We adopted one of our dogs from HAVA’s Freedom Tails program!
Hi there, writing to check in about the list and find out if it’s available in excel or word? Would love to connect with you via email. If you’re open to that, I’ll send you my email address.
Thank you.
Jeanine Foucher
It will be available in google documents in the next day or so. Thanks for checking. My email is info@seattledogspot.com.
Hi, just checked google docs and don’t see it up yet. I have emailed a couple of times but haven’t heard back so posting a comment seems like the best way to communicate – yes?
